I am always excited to explore new cities and discover what they have to offer. However it is incredibly exciting to visit cities that become more than you expect, that give you the greatest surprise and show you a real good time. For me, that was San Francisco!
Everyone I speak to about San Francisco says that they absolutely loved the city, I am not sure what I was expecting but this bustling city in the Bay Area is full of life, friendly locals and incredible views everywhere you look. So how do I do San Fran, as I have affectionally named it, what is it about and what do I do I hear you ask!
San Fran is the financial, commercial and cultural centre of Northan California so there is a lot to see and do. Explore it all! With a number of cultured and picture perfect hot spots such as Pier 39, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, The Painted Ladies, Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park and the Cable cars you can easily fill up your time between sites with festivals, music, entertainment and more.
Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary
Due to my quick pop in to San Fran I could not make it to Alcatraz this time. However I would highly recommend to those visiting and wanting to head over to the abandoned prison book your tickets weeks in advance! To go over to this historical site, tickets sell out quick and in peak times it can be hard to get a ticket. You wouldn’t want to miss out!!
Pier 39 and The Fishermans Wharf
Certainly not to be missed is the Fishermans Wharf where you will also find the infamous Pier 39. As you stroll along the marina taking in the beautiful boats, shops, restaurants and street performers you can’t help but feel like you are in a side show with bustling crowds, colour left, right and centre pulling your focus all over. Once you have browsed the wharf head over to Pier 39 where you can find the local seals having a sun bathe, buskers, shops, galleries and restaurants to soak up all afternoon. Certainly an afternoon well spent.
Golden Gate Bridge
This stunning architecture is often found hiding behind the infamous San Fran fog, but when she comes out its pure magnificence! Fair warning if you plan on walking or cycling the bridge, take a jumper it gets pretty chilly on the walk. Walking took an 80 min round trip to do, but it was well worth the while. Be prepared your photos will probably have others and fog in them but the views and majestic nature of the Golden Gate Bridge simply take your breath away. Well thats either from its beauty or because you just power walked for 80min to escape the chill in the air. She’s iconic, spectacular and a must see for any and every San Fran visit!
A city is more than the tourist attractions it has on offer so don’t forget to stop being a tourist and be an adventurer! Walk or cable car where you can, talk to the locals as much as you can. Bartenders are a wealth of knowledge on whats good after dark. Sometimes Uber drivers are too! So, get planning and visit San Francisco real soon!
Be safe Wanderers xx
